Boram at IIUD has worked with Céline Janssen at Delft University of Technology on developing the booklet "Designing for human development: How the capability approach can help". This booklet is the outcome of the project "Operationalizing the Capability Approach in design and technology field", supported by the Delft Design for Value Seed Projects.
On 6 February 2025, there will be a presentation of the booklet content, followed by a panel discussion with the audience. We invite you to join us at this event as we present the booklet and discuss how the Capability Approach can inspire designs that truly enhance people’s lives and promote justice.

About the project
Design has the power to improve people’s lives, but how can we ensure that it does so in a way that is fair and meaningful? Increasingly, researchers at technical universities are exploring the potential of the Capability Approach, a framework developed by Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen and philosopher Martha Nussbaum. At its core, the Capability Approach focuses on expanding people’s opportunities to lead lives they value.
While the concept of justice might seem abstract, the Capability Approach offers concrete ways to make design more sensitive to people’s diverse needs and aspirations. But how can this be applied in the design of policies, strategies, technologies, and products? To answer this question, the project team brought together experienced researchers from various fields of design and technology, such as urban planning, housing policy, energy, and biotechnology. Through collaborative discussions and insights, the team developed this booklet to serve as a guiding tool for integrating the Capability Approach into design processes.
